What is refractive surgery?

• First, a thin surface flap of the cornea is created using a microkeratome, or a femto laser, which takes a few seconds. Second, the excimer laser is used which removes a very small amount of tissue from the inner portion of your cornea. The excimer laser is pre-programmed with the exact correction needed for an individual.
• Short laser pulses correct the curvature of the cornea, allowing images to be focused clearly on the retina- and thus reducing the need for glasses.

The corneal flap is then placed back into its original position restoring a smooth, intact surface.

 

In the latest technique of i-LASIK or Blade-free LASIK, the corneal flap is created by an advanced technology called the Intralase Method which makes the use of a special Femtosecond laser. When we use a femto laser to create the corneal flap, some refer to it as Bladeless or Blade-free LASIK laser eye surgery.

It is a new technique where NO BLADE is used in the surgery, thus making it bladefree LASIK surgery.

 

The IntraLaseTM method uses a specialized laser called Femtosecond laser instead of an oscillating blade to create the corneal flap.

 

This is achieved by focusing laser energy at a precise location below the surface of the cornea. By placing thousands of such individual laser pulses side by side one can create a cut within the cornea without the use of a blade.

Most patients report clear vision within a few hours to days after LASIK. The vision steadily improves and clears up as days pass.

 

It is important to remember that the vision may be a little blurry for the first few hours after LASIK surgery. Some patients may even experience mild discomfort which is easily relieved by medication. We, thus, encourage our patients to rest for a day after the surgery.

 

Your surgeon will explain the precautions to be observed following LASIK. And You must also come diligently for all the follow-up visits.

We usually follow up the day after surgery i.e. day 1, one week after surgery, one month, 3 months and 6 months post LASIK.

As contact lenses can alter the shape of your cornea we recommend that you remove your contacts prior to your pre-operative checkup. By removing the lenses, the cornea will be return to its more natural shape before measurements are taken. These measurements decide whether you are a good candidate for LASIK or not.

 

If you wear soft lenses, they should be removed a minimum of one week before your checkup.

 

If you wear rigid/gas permeable lenses, the lenses must be removed at least 6-8 weeks prior to your checkup.

You will not experience pain during the procedure as the surgeon will use anesthetic drops before starting the procedure to numb the eye. There might be slight discomfort or pressure sensation. After the procedure, the surgeon may prescribe pain medication if required.

Yes, most patients find it convenient to have both eyes treated on the same day. If you are getting an ICL implanted, we prefer to wait 4-5 days between the two eyes. Our surgeons will help you decide what is best for you.

A small number of patients see well after surgery and then experience regression. There is a a gradual worsening of vision. If this happens, consult with your eye care practitioner to determine the cause and to see if retreatment (enhancement) is appropriate.

There are some standard, universal precautions which are recommended for anyone undergoing a refractive procedure.

 

• Take a day off from work on the day of surgery and rest after the LASIK and around 4-5 days after ICL.
• If your eyes hurt in bright light, use dark glasses. The glasses also help in a small way to keep dust out of your eyes.
• Don’t rub your eyes.
• Don’t touch the eyes with unclean fingers.
• Start and continue the eye drops prescribed by our eye surgeons.
• You can start using screens- TV, computers etc from the next day. You may experience a little discomfort initially.
• Week 1. We recommend that you do not let water get into or near your eyes in the week following surgery. Do not splash water on to your face. Your eyelids need to be cleaned gently with sterile cotton dipped in filtered water.
• Week 2. You can bathe normally if your doctor so recommends on your day 7 follow up visit.

Every surgical procedure carries a certain number of risks and side effects. Laser eye surgery is no exception. While the chances of most of the problems listed below occurring are very low, it’s still important to be aware of them so you’ll know what to expect. Please feel free to discuss whatever worries you may have with your surgeon. A specific end result cannot be guaranteed, although it can be closely predicted based on data from thousands of previous cases During the first few days after surgery, most people can expect to experience at least some of these effects- Increased sensitivity to light, halos and glare at night, gritty sensation in the eye and dry, red spots on the cornea. In most cases, these effects lessen or disappear over time as the eye heals.

 

Serious complications are fortunately rare, with LASIK. Some of these include infection, wrinkles in the flap, epithelial in growth and increased or decreased response to correction. These complications are usually treatable with medication or further surgery. Corneal ectasia is a very rare and serious complication which may cause permanent visual loss or require a corneal transplant.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a procedure in which the top layer (skin) of the cornea is removed and the laser is then applied directly to the cornea. It is useful in patients who want to join combat related professions as well as in thin corneas. It doesn’t involve the creation of a partial thickness corneal flap . The patient may feel a little pain and blurriness after the surgery for 3 to 5 days which is easily treated with eye drops.

In many situations PRK surgery and LASIK surgery can have comparable results although your surgeon can discuss which is most appropriate for your condition during your consultation. A major difference is that in LASIK surgery a hinged flap is created on the cornea while in PRK, rather than creating a flap, it involves polishing the surface of the cornea. PRK is often recommended when the cornea is too thin for LASIK.

PRK takes as long as LASIK. Around 10 to 15 minutes for the entire procedure of two eyes.

It is an implantable collamer lens that is placed inside the eye to help focus light onto the retina. This is also offered to patients who may not be eligible for LASIK but want to get rid of their glasses.

In ICL we operate one eye at a time. The procedure time is also around 15 to 20 minutes for one eye.
