What inspired you to choose ophthalmology?

We have a strong tradition of Eye Care in our family and this inspired me to take up Ophthalmology. I also found it to be an interesting subject!

Where did you study?

I completed my medical and ophthalmology training from the prestigious Maulana Azad Medical College in Delhi and then specialisation from Vienna.

Other Achievements?

I performed my first intraocular lens implant surgery in 1982 and was amongst the few at the time who were doing this surgery. I was also amongst the first in the country to start Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery in 1992 and initiate refractive surgery in India.

Having delivered many keynote addresses and presentations at National and International conferences, I have also published papers in many peer reviewed journals and also contributed to chapters in Ophthalmic Textbooks. I am actively involved in teaching and have held prominent positions in medical societies.

In recognition of my work in ophthalmology and service to the community and the underprivileged, I was honored to receive the Padma Bhushan in the field of Medicine in 2010.
