DNB Ophthalmology Program

Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is a Postgraduate Master’s degree same as an MD/MS degree awarded to Specialist Doctors in India after completing a three-year residency. DNB courses are run and the degrees are awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), New Delhi, an autonomous academic body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India to the candidates on successful completion of their postgraduate residency.

    Selection as per counselling after NEET/ CET exams conducted by National board of examination, New Delhi.

    Primary DNB - 3 years

Teaching program

  • Seminars
    • Case presentations and seminars are held regularly to encourage learning and discussion.
    • Module-wise curriculum
    • Regular evaluation through internal assessment to track the overall progress of the candidates
  • Rotations
    • Students are posted in different departments like Cataract, Cornea & Refractive, Retina, Glaucoma, Oculoplasty and squint.
    • Also trained to manage emergency cases under the guidance of fellow or consultants
    • Charitable clinic at DCWA & Camps- DNB students are posted to the charitable clinic at DCWA for performing surgeries and handling OPDs.
    • Camps- Students can be posted in eye camps where they work-up the patients.
  • Diagnostics
    Learn to perform and interpret ophthalmological tests such as OCT, Pentacam etc.
  • Surgical
    • Students have an opportunity to observe and assist some of the best eye surgeons in India as well as see top of the line surgeries including
      - Femto-assisted cataract surgeries, phacoemulsification, Vitreo-retinal surgeries, Refractive surgeries, DCR, Ptosis correction, Oculoplasty surgery, Corneal transplants
    • Supervised surgical training to teach common surgeries like cataract surgery, pterygium excision and glaucoma surgery
    • Emphasis on learning the correct technique
    • Learning proper documentation of patient records is also stressed upon
  • Conferences & Research
    DNB students are welcome to take part and pursue research at Shroff Eye Centre along with their clinical work. Paper and poster presentations at conferences are also encouraged. DNB students are also encouraged to volunteer and attend inhouse conferences, training programs and CMEs.

A renowned and well loved teacher, Prof Ritu Arora was Dean of Maulana Azad Medical College from February 2021 to December 2022. She is also an ex- Director of Guru Nanak Eye Centre.

    This depends on the course. DNB admissions are based on NEET counselling. Fellowships and optometry trainee/ observership/ internships have variable admission dates based on seat availability and our requirement.     DNB admissions are based on NEET exam and counseling. Fellows have to provide their CV, statement of interest and go through an interview process with our faculty to qualify.

  • Do you provide a stipend?

    Yes. DNB and fellows receive a stipend based on NBE and hospital guidelines.

  • Do you provide surgical training to fellows?

    Yes, depending on your subspeciality, you will be given ample surgical opportunities in your fellowship.
