What is Normal Tension Glaucoma?

Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) is a form of glaucoma in which the Optic Nerve gets damaged despite the eye pressure being within generally accepted normal limits . It is also known as low tension glaucoma.
In general, a “normal” eye pressure range is between 12-21 mm Hg.
Scientists and researchers are still trying to figure out why the Optic Nerve is damaged when the intraocular pressure is relatively low or normal. It is thought that people with normal-tension glaucoma have an abnormally sensitive optic nerve or they may have a reduced blood supply to the optic nerve.
We do know that the risk of normal tension glaucoma is more in people with a family history of normal-tension glaucoma, those with a history of migraines and people with a history of blood flow problems.
