How does LASIK work?
A thin surface flap of the cornea is created using a microkeratome which takes a few seconds. Following this, the excimer laser is used which removes a very small amount of tissue from the inner portion of your cornea. The excimer laser is pre-programmed with the exact correction needed for an individual.
These short laser pulses correct the curvature of the cornea, allowing images to be focused clearly on the retina- and thus reducing the need for glasses.
The corneal flap is then smoothed back into its original position, which takes usually three to five minutes to seal back, restoring a smooth, intact surface.
In the latest technique of i-LASIK or Blade-free LASIK, the corneal flap is created by an advanced technology called the Intralase Method which makes the use of a special Femtosecond laser.
