-
Can retina problems occur in children and young adults?
Retina issues can affect any age group. People with high myopia, premature birth history, diabetes, chronic use of steroids or other medication, a history of trauma to the eye and with family history of retina problems are at a higher risk of retina problems. A dilated eye check-up at least once a year is recommended to catch any problems early.
-
Are retina problems hereditary?
Some retina conditions are hereditary. Conditions like retinitis pigmentosa, macular dystrophies, rod and cone dystrophies can be inherited and thus may run in families. Eye conditions like retinoblastoma, age related macular degeneration have a genetic link. If there's a family history, regular dilated eye checkups are important.
-
I'm seeing moving spots in my vision, is this normal?
Moving spots in vision are called floaters. These are usually harmless but we recommend a checkup by a retina specialist to make sure your retina is ok. If you see a sudden increase in floaters or sudden new floaters, or if the floaters are accompanied by flashes of light, this could be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment. Please see a retina specialist urgently.
-
I'm getting eye flashes, is this normal?
No, seeing flashes of light in the dark or when no flash of light is present is not normal and may indicate an underlying problem with your retina. Patients often describe flashes as seeing lightening streaks, little sparklers or lit up mosquitos in your vision. Most often flashes are seen in retina tears or retina detachment.
-
Can you change retina with eye transplant?
No, the retina or eyeball cannot be transplanted or changed. What patients call "eye transplant" is actually a corneal transplant – only the front part of the eye called the cornea can be replaced. The retina is a light sensing layer at the back of the eye and cannot be transplanted or changed. We perform corneal transplants at Shroff Eye Centre.
-
Can detached retina be attached again?
Yes, in most cases a detached retina can be re-attached to its normal position with retina surgery such as scleral buckling or gas tamponade. However it is important to remember a successful anatomical reattachment doesn't always mean a full return of retina function as before detachment.
