| HISTORY - Four Generations of Devotion
to Eye Care |
|
|
The
Shroffs have been pioneers in the field of professional eye care in
northern India. The foundation for the humane family traditions of
eye care was laid by Dr. S. P. Shroff, who became a Fellow of the
Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, U.K in the year 1910. He started
Ophthalmological work in Delhi and established "Dr.Shroff's Charity
Eye Hospital" at Daryaganj, Delhi in 1926 making it the first hospital
of its kind in northern India. Dedicating it solely to eye care he
equipped it with the best of instruments and facilities available
at that time. |
| |
 |
The
tradition was carried forward by Dr. S.P. Shroff's son, Dr. Minoo
Shroff and subsequently by his grandsons, Dr. Noshir Shroff and Dr.
Cyrus Shroff. Dr. Noshir's son, Dr. Daraius Shroff completed his M.S.
in Ophthalmology from Guru Nanak Eye Centre, New Delhi and a Vitreo-retinal
Fellowship at the prestigious Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. |
| |
| Now, approaching 100 years and 4 generations
of providing Quality Eye Care to the citizens of Delhi, the commitment
"To provide patients from all walks of life, including the weaker
sections of society, with the best possible eye care using the latest
technology and equipments" continues to be fulfilled. |
| |
Shroff Eye Centre started as an eye clinic in 1972, housed in "Surya
Kiran" building at Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi. At that time it
was run by only one ophthalmologist, Dr. Minoo S. Shroff, and provided
OPD services in General Ophthalmology only. The Kailash Colony branch
was established in 1973, with the starting of OPD services in General
Ophthalmology. Cataract & Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) implant services
and refractive surgery services were started in 1978 with Dr. Noshir
M. Shroff joining the centre. |
| |
A
separate Retina & Vitreous subspecialty was started in 1984, when
Dr. Cyrus M. Shroff joined the centre. Shroff Eye Centre in its present
from was incorporated as a partnership firm on April 2, 1984 with
Dr. Minoo S. Shroff, Dr. Noshir M. Shroff, and Dr. Cyrus M. Shroff
as the Medical Directors. |
| |
Since
then the centre has undergone rapid expansion and has acquired state-of-the-art
modern facilities in all fields of ophthalmology. A-scan biometer
and operating microscope were installed in 1983-84. Prior to 1983
all eye surgeries were being performed by the surgeons of the centre
at the residences of the patients on domiciliary basis. From 1983
onwards, with the advent of microsurgery in ophthalmology, eye surgeries
are being performed only in an Operation Theatre (OT). Between 1983
and 1986, the centre installed its own operating microscope and other
equipment in an exclusive eye OT at New Delhi Nursing Home. From 1986-2001,
the centre had a liaison with Dr. Sharma's Nursing Home, located at
a short distance from the centre, for inpatient and operating room
(OR) facilities. All patients requiring admission or surgery were
admitted to Dr. Sharma's Nursing Home. All equipment in the operation
theatre was installed by Shroff Eye Centre. |
| |
| In 1985-86, the centre acquired B-scan ultrasound and
YAG laser. Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) was started in 1986-87.
In the same year it also became one of the first private centres in
Delhi to install Argon Laser, and perform advanced vitreo-retinal
surgery for complex vitreo-retinal problems, with regular up gradation
to use of endolaser, indirect ophthalmoscopic laser and perfluorocarbon
liquids & gases. |
| |
| Phacoemulsification surgery for cataract was started
in 1992. In the same year computerized Visual Field Analysis (VFA)
facility was also installed. |
| |
| Shroff Eye Centre opened its first centre in Gurgaon
at the Commercial Plaza Radisson Suites, B Block Sushant Lok on 27th
January 2009. This center is equipped with modern state-of-the-art
diagnostic modalities and advanced surgical facilities, including
microincision phacoemulsification cataract surgery and Advanced Customized
LASIK for removal of spectacles. The centre is committed to provide
patients excellent eye care, with honesty and integrity in keeping
with the vision of founder, Dr. S.P. Shroff. With the joining of Dr.
Daraius Shroff the legacy continues in the fourth generation. |
| |
| Glaucoma Service as a separate subspecialty was started
in March 1993 when Professor N.N. Sood, the renowned Glaucoma specialist
joined the group. |
| |
| In 1994, a separate Cornea Clinic was started. Squint
& Orthoptics Clinic was started in 1995. Laser refractive surgery
was started with the addition of computerized Corneal Topography system
in 1996, the first in Delhi. |
| |
| Rehabilitative services of the centre were introduced
in 1998 in the form of a weekly Low Vision Aids (LVA) clinic. The
same year digital imaging system for FFA and Indo-Cyanine Green (ICG)
Angiography was also installed. This was only the second such installation
in India. |
| |
Between
1999 and 2001, the Kailash Colony clinic underwent major expansion
and renovation. The renovated outpatient department started functioning
in Feb 2001. Inpatient services and in-house operation theatre services
were started in August 2001. The centre was also the first private
clinic in Delhi to install facilities for Transpupillary Thermo-Therapy
(TTT) in 2001, and later in 2003, also started offering services for
providing Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). |
| |
In
2003, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) a non-invasive retinal imaging
device, and GDxVCC Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Analyzer for early detection
of glaucoma, was installed. In the same year, Shroff Eye Centre was
the first center in India to install the VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser
System for customized laser vision correction. The state-of-the-art
Nicolet system for dedicated Ocular Electrodiagnostics including Electro-retinogram
(ERG), Electro-oculogram (EOG) and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP),
was installed in 2005. In the same year, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
(SLT), a new modality for treatment of glaucoma was introduced. |
| |
| In 2005, Shroff Eye Centre was recognized by the National
Board of examinations for conducting the National Board Training programmme
in ophthalmology. |
| |
| In 2006, the centre acquired the non-contact IOLMaster
for accurate estimation of intraocular lens power calculation. In
2007, Shroff Eye Centre installed the Alcon Infiniti Vision System
with OZil Technology, which is a new device for improving the safety
of cataract surgery. One of our latest acquisitions in 2008 is the
i-LASIK femtosecond Intralase device for performing 100% blade-free
laser vision correction. The other was the installation of Spectral
Domain OCT (Optovue), which provides very high-resolution retinal
imaging, with applications for the early detection of glaucoma, as
well as imaging of the cornea and anterior segment at a microscopic
level. |
